I define leadership as a quality possessed by those who can serve as an example to others through actions, words, or ways of thinking. From my point of view, a leader is someone who can help, influence, and show others how to achieve success. A competency that is a strength for me is the personal/self-level. For someone to be a leader, they need to know how to control and manage themselves first, before trying to guide others. This is an important competency because it encompasses things such as self-knowledge, empathy, integrity, and self-management, which are what serve as the foundation for someone to become a great leader. Personally, I have been working for a long time on some of these aspects and I feel very confident about myself in relation to this competency. As a college student, it is very helpful to know how you function better and how to control yourself. To give an example, self-knowledge and self-management are very important and helpful for me because both allow me to work/study in a way that I know works best for me. On the other hand, if I didn’t know my study type and which ways I learn faster, I would be struggling to keep up with classes and the material that is given every week. As a community member and in my future career, in addition to the characteristics mentioned before, it’s also important that I have empathy and integrity to be able to provide the needed care and know my place and responsibility within the community. Since I am satisfied with my personal leadership skills, the next competency that I want to improve is in the interpersonal/team-level. Just like in the personal competency, the interpersonal is very important for a leader to have. Leaders need to be able to communicate effectively and know how to work with others. For this reason, I would consider this my weakness. Although I am good at teamwork, I still have a lot to improve in this aspect. Having great group dynamics, followership, and relationship management are important skills that can help me as a student, to know how to communicate with my classmates and professors. As a community member, this competency will help me build more meaningful relationships and immerse myself more into the culture of where I live. Being a healthcare professional involves a lot of teamwork and a common purpose ¾ provide quality care and improve the health of the patients. With that being said, by working on my interpersonal skills, I will be closer to becoming the leader that I want to be. For that to happen, I need to get involved in more activities to make more connections and be more communicative both in and outside of the classroom. As I stated in the beginning, a leader is a person who can serve as an example to be followed. Hopefully, one day, I will get to succeed in all competencies of leadership and become a great leader to those who will be surrounding me in the future, both professionally and personally.
