Ever since I finished high school, in 2016, I have changed my mind about which profession I wanted to pursue a few times, but I always knew that I wanted to work in the healthcare field. Finally, after a lot of research and thinking, I decided that I wanted to become a physician assistant (PA). After dropping out of my university in Brazil, where I was majoring in speech and hearing sciences, I started my college journey in the US believing that I wanted to become a nurse. This thought lasted until I had my first job as a resident assistant at an assisted living facility, which made me realize that maybe nursing was not the right path for me. With that in mind, I decided to enroll in a program to become a certified medical assistant (CMA), because I wanted to experience how it was to work in hospitals/clinics before committing to a significant change in my career choice. Besides that, becoming a CMA before finishing my bachelor’s degree would also allow me to have a backup plan in case any adversity happened, and I ended up not being able to complete my studies. I was introduced to the physician assistant profession during my first class of the CMA program, where I first heard about the pros and cons of pursuing a career as a PA. Taking into consideration the fact that I am a very indecisive person, having the opportunity to switch departments without going back to school was one of the many characteristics of the physician assistant profession that caught my attention and, eventually, made me fall in love with it. That being said, my plan is to graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and start working towards getting a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Rosalind Franklin University. As mentioned above, if I fail to achieve my main professional goal, my first choice is to continue working as a CMA. Not only because I already have the certification and experience, but also because I find it a very rewarding profession. The interaction with the patients provided by the CMA profession is something that I really enjoy and value. My first job in healthcare made me realize that I work best in a fast-paced environment, where I have different responsibilities and duties throughout the day. In addition to that, during my clinical training for the CMA program, I found out that the hospital/clinic environment fits me better than a long-term care environment because I get to care and interact with patients but in a more relaxed and less stressful setting. Aside from continuing my work as a CMA, another career option that would be interesting for me is being a phlebotomist. Over the past year, I had to take a phlebotomy class for the CMA program, which made me realize that drawing blood is something that I really enjoy doing as well. I have even looked for jobs as a phlebotomist and luckily, since I already have my medical assistant certificate, the only thing I would need to work in this area is more experience. Lastly, another field that I find interesting to pursue a career in is medical microbiologist. Before transferring to U of I, I took a microbiology class in my community college, which almost made me switch my major to molecular and cellular biology instead of I-Health. This is a field that intrigues me a lot, and although I have never had any experience in it, I believe it would also be a great fit for me. For a self-proclaimed indecisive person, I can see myself becoming a physician assistant and being very contented with my career choice. However, it is always good to have other plans in case something doesn’t go as planned.
